All sessions will be held in Lecture Room E (also referred to as Room 611) on Level 6 in the Boyd Orr Building, University of Glasgow. Registration facilities and poster presentations will be in Seminar Room 609/10, adjacent to Lecture Room E. Refreshments will be served in the Snack Bar area along the same corridor. The Boyd Orr Building is easy to find on the Hillhead Campus because, with its 10 storeys, it is one of only two high-rise buildings (the other one being the University Library). It is located on University Avenue, halfway between Byres Road and the Main University Building.
Registration will begin at 8.30 on Thursday 5 June and Bianisotropics'97 will officially start at 9.00.
There will be a Civic Reception at Glasgow City Chambers in George Square in the City Centre on Thursday 5 June from 18.30 - 20.00. This will include a snack buffet, wine and soft drinks. George Square can be most conveniently reached by taking the Underground to Buchanan Street Station (estimated travel time: 15 minutes). Upon exiting the station and facing down Buchanan Street, take a left turn into West George Street. The City Chambers are straight ahead.
Delegates will be advised of the possible availability of a shuttle bus.
The Conference Dinner will be held on Friday 6 June from 18.45 in the Staff Dining Rooms in the Main University Building. The conference dinner is free for all registered delegates. The accompanying person rate is GBP 18 and should be paid upon registration so that the final number of participants of the dinner can be made known to the caterers.
Email facilities are available in the Mathematics Department for the duration of the conference. The Mathematics Department is the 4-storey building next to the Boyd Orr Building. See a separate sheet for more detailed information on how to use the facilities.
There are payphones on the ground floor of the Boyd Orr Building and at the junction of University Avenue and Byres Road.
Fax messages can be received during the conference. The fax number of the Department of Mathematics is 0141 - 330 4111 (from within GB) or + 44 - 141 - 330 4111 (international). Anyone wishing to send faxes should consult a member of the local organization team for further instructions.
The University Library, the highest building on the Hillhead Campus, 100 metres from the main gatehouse, operates a ticket entry system. Visitor tickets, valid from 4 to 9 June have been issued to all delegates and can be found with the conference materials. It is requested that everyone using the Library fills out the attached form and hands it in upon entering. The tickets will give access to all library facilities but they will not permit to take away any books, journals, etc, from the Library. Tickets need not be returned to the library or to the organizer upon departure.
No specific arrangements will be made for lunches. On campus, the staff dining rooms (in the Main Building) or the student refectory (in the Hub) provide lunches. There are various restaurants and cafes in Ashton Lane (passing underneath the Boyd Orr Building) and many more in the general Byres Road Area. There are also various shops in Byres Road selling sandwiches, snacks and drinks.
A substantial number of restaurants in the Byres Road area, along Great Western Road and in the City Centre provide dinner for all kinds of tastes.
A first-aid kit will be kept at the reception desk. For more substantial problems, please use the Accidents and Emergencies Department of the Western Infirmary. This hospital is just a few hundred metres from the campus and it is most easily located by an isolated high, grey chimney.
The Clydesdale Bank has a branch in the Hub on campus whereas the two other major Scottish banks, The Bank of Scotland and The Royal Bank of Scotland, have branches in Byres Road. Also, many travel agents in Byres Road offer currency exchange.
A Post Office can be found near the junction of Byres Road and Great Western Road. It is located in the back of a Spar shop.
Shops in all categories can be found along Byres Road.
Bianisotropics'97 is a non-smoking event. Note that smoking is not permitted within public areas (such as lecture theatres, seminar rooms, corridors, toilets, etc.) in buildings of the University of Glasgow. Both the Civic Reception and the Conference Dinner are designated as non-smoking events.
