The research interests of the Department can roughly be divided into Applied and Pure Mathematics and respectively subdivided into Fluid Dynamics & Magnetohydrodynamics, Integrable Systems and Mathematical Physics, Mathematical Biology and Solid Mechanics, and Algebra, Analysis, Geometry and Algebraic Topology and Number Theory & Combinatorics. Such a division is of course very crude and ignores many important intersections between the different areas. These give an added vibrancy to the research activity in this large department. Both Applied and Pure received ratings of 5 in the 2002 Research Assessment Exercise.
