If you graduate with an Honours degree in Mathematics, whether it is as a single subject or in combination with some other discipline, you will find a wide range of careers open to you. Over the years our students have followed many different career paths, ranging from high finance to medical research.
In recent years, graduates in the Mathematical Sciences have been amongst the best paid new graduates. Graduates from Glasgow are very well thought of in industry and finance. Our degree is also well respected by other universities, and about 30% of our graduates go on to a further degree either in Glasgow or elsewhere. Mathematicians are in great demand in the world of finance, with opportunities to work in insurance, banking, accountancy and stockbroking. There are jobs available in engineering and other areas of industry, where the mathematical modelling and problem solving skills gained in the course are highly prized. Students also go directly into jobs in computing from our Mathematics degree.
In the current job market, Mathematical Sciences graduates are among those with the lowest unemployment rate, with 96% finding employment within 6 months of graduating. Only vocational degrees, such as Medicine and Dentistry have a better record. With the increasing importance of savings and pension provision and the growth of Information Technology, this trend seems set to continue for some time in the future.
