The department teaches honours degrees in both Mathematics and Applied Mathematics. Both these can be taken either as a 4 year B.Sc. or as a 5 year M.Sci.
These degrees can be taken in combination with a wide variety of subjects in the Science Faculties. Common combinations are Physics, Computing and Statistics, but we also have students who do Management Science or Astronomy. Mathematics or Applied Mathematics can also be taken as an honours degree in the Faculty of Arts and Social Science, allowing combinations such as Mathematics and Music, Mathematics and French or Mathematics and Philosophy.
Students intending to do Honours in the department normally start at Level-1 in 1R and this is followed by 1S in the second half year.
The prerequisites for the Mathematics degree are Level-2 courses in Analysis, Algebra and Calculus. For the Applied Mathematics degree, students have to do Calculus at Level 2, but can gain entry with a course in Linear Algebra and two modelling modules. The Mathematics degree covers both pure and applied mathematics, with the two sides equally balanced at Level 3 and the possibility of specialising at Level 4 in either area. The Applied Mathematics degree emphasises applications, whether in areas important in modelling or cryptography, and so the available options are biased towards applicable mathematics.
In collaboration with the Departments of Statistics and Computing, we also offer a degree in Mathematical Sciences, where students follow all three disciplines for their first three years of study. In the fourth year students can choose to specialise in two out of the three subjects. This gives a degree with a wide knowledge base, which might suit some students better.
For students who do not wish to continue to Honours we offer a Designated Degree in Mathematics.
The first two years of our course are modular.
In addition to our core courses, we teach service courses for Engineers and other specialist groups.
