Based in the West-End of Glasgow, Scotland, the club exists to promote interest and enjoyment of Lieder and Art Song amongst amateur singers and accompanists in the Glasgow region. It provides an opportunity to perform in a relaxed, congenial atmosphere in order to develop performance skills and learn from others.
The repertoire includes traditional Lieder and its modern developments. A typical evening may include songs sung in English, German, French, Italian, Gaelic or Russian. We also welcome small scale vocal chamber ensemble pieces and welcome other voice instrument combinations in addition to the conventional voice and piano.
Membership of the club is informal. Initially drawn from competitors at local music festivals, singing teachers and their students, all performers are welcome. For each evening an official accompanist is arranged but many singers bring their own accompanists and there is scope for singers and accompanists to develop new working relationships. Non-performing guests are very welcome. Interested parties should enquire via the e-mail addresses below or to: Chris Athorne, Department of Mathematics, University of Glasgow, University Gardens, G12 8QW.
The format of meetings, which are held on three or four occasions each year, is generally a couple of hours (with interval) of recitals of up to eight minutes per singer, including food and refreshments. To cover this and the hire of the official accompanist there is a £7.50 contribution per head (excepting performing accompanists) per evening and people are asked to provide a bottle of something appropriate. A newsletter is published between meetings and is sent out to all on the GL&AS database (currently about 90).
