Potted CV
My university education started at the University of
St Andrews (1972-1976, BSc Hons in Applied
Mathematics and Theoretical Physics) followed by the University of
Newcastle-upon-Tyne (1976-1979, PhD in Applied Mathematics). There followed one
year at the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics
Institute, Florida State University and 5 years at DAMTP, Cambridge. Appointed to a
lectureship in the Department of Mathematics, University of Glasgow in 1985, I
was promoted to a personal chair in 1993. I was Head of Department from
1997-2003, and was a panel member of UoA23 (Applied Mathematics) for RAE2001. I
am a member of the EPSRC College and was a member of the Scientific Steering
Committee of the Isaac Newton Institute,
Cambridge (2008-2011). I was Dean of the Faculty of Information and
Mathematical Sciences (2004-2010) and am currently Dean of Learning &
Teaching in the College of Science
& Engineering and International
Dean for the Americas. I also convene the project board on Full Economic
Costing. o:p>

Research Interests
My research interests are in fluid
dynamics, particularly hydrodynamic stability theory and magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), with motivation from
geophysical problems. My work has focussed on two areas: dynamo theory
(particularly magnetic field
stability ) and compositional
convection. A review article gives some
details of the former.

Research Students and
RAs
My research students have worked on a variety of
problems motivated by the geodynamo:
ashave RAs Werner Weiglhofer,
Carolyn Sellar and Ken Hutcheson. Stephen and Chris
have gone on to jobs with GEC-Marconi (now BAE Systems), and Richard is in the
computer games business (formerly with Codemasters). Douglas works
for Standard Life, Carolyn works
for Business Collaborator and
Ken works for Edinburgh Petroleum
Services , as also now does Graeme (formerly
with Halcrow).
Werner was appointed to a Lectureship in this Department in 1991 and
subsequently promoted to Professor in 2002. Tragically he was killed by an
avalanche in Norway on 12 January 2003. Mansur is a lecturer at Sultan Qaboos
University. Shona works for SubSea7.
