I was born and educated in Australia, and came to Britain a number of years ago. My research is predominantly in combinatorial group theory. I like this subject not only for its own sake, but because it also has links with several other branches of mathematics, and because it uses a variety of techniques (group-theoretic, ring-theoretic, homological, geometric, topological, and language-theoretic). My main forté is the use of geometric techniques. Recently, I have been adapting some of these techniques to deal with various questions concerning string rewriting systems. This work is of interest in theoretical computer science.
