Increase the screen resolution in VMWare for a Ubuntu guest.

A fresh installation of Ubuntu on Oracle's VMWare usually does not allow to change the screen resolution. The solution described here works with Ubuntu 14.04, 15.04 and 15.10. To increase it you need to increase the video memory in the VMWare settings for your virtual machine, install the following packages and restart the system.
sudo apt-get install virtualbox-guest-dkms
sudo apt-get install virtualbox-guest-x11
Should you get an error message about unmet dependencies remove libcheese-gtk23 and reinstall the xserver:
sudo apt-get remove libcheese-gtk23
sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-core
sudo apt-get install -f virtualbox-guest-x11
Now restart the system and you will be able to change the resolution and resize the screen.
